There are many benefits of using the JAK®-coupling system - some of the main features are listed below:

Environmentally Safe

The standard model (P-type) has a pneumatic operation which gives a minimized risk of oil pollution, compared to hydraulic systems.

For lubrication, only environmentally safe grease qualities are used

Small Power Demand

The JAK®-coupling system utilizes the existing power supply of the tug

Further the only requirements from tug systems are 24V DC supply for the control system as well as compressed air supply (425 psi).

The power consumption of the JAK®-system is only 5 kW.

Small Space Demand

The JAK®-coupling is very compact and as there is no on-deck equipment the space requirements onboard for installation is very small.

Simple Construction

The simple construction reflects in ease of operation as well as less need for maintenance and less need of spares and consumables.

Model Tested for Reliability

The pin-load has been model tested on a model tug-barge system at the ship model basin of VTT - the Technical Research Center of Finland in different sea-states speeds and angles of attack. The results are applied for each tug-barge combination to establish the applicable sea-state limits.
